March 2023 Updates

Player Upload for Session

If you have a large club you might well organise who is coming for a given session outside the vsBadminton app.

We considered providing features to organise attendance at a session, but it is likely that most people will prefer to use email or some social media or messaging system.

Therefore we have added a feature where you can load a list of names into vsBadminton, and the players on the list will be marked as “present” for the current session. That way if you have a list in a spreadsheet, an email, or a message, you can just copy and paste it into vsBadminton.

This is on the cogwheel menu, called “Upload Player List”

The upload process has two stages - first you upload your list, and vsBadminton will look up which entries on the list match players in your club. Next it will check any of the names that didn’t match. In some cases it might suggest a near match, if not it will ask if you want to add a new player.

Once you have added or skipped all the mismatches, it will add the new players and mark everyone as present for the session.

If anyone was completely missed, of course you can still add them or make any other adjustments.

If you are working on a phone, it is easier to paste whatever you have into the screen, and fix any errors afterwards. Things like blank lines, long chunks of text, comments in brackets, numbers and punctuation will be ignored. If it asks you if you want to add a player called “Next Thursday”, just tell it no.

As an example, the following should import just fine:

Message received 11:18am 2023-03-15

Copying Clubs

You might want to split a club in two. There’s now a “Copy to new club” button on the “Club” screen that will let you create a new club with the same player list as the current one.

The first session of the new club will have the same players as the old club, and it will remember when they last played and the estimate of their playing strength. vsBadminton doesn’t track any other information about players.

However, from that point on the clubs are separate. As the strength estimates change for a player in one club, that won’t affect the other.

The permissions of vsBadminton users will also be copied from the old club to the new club. Again, from that point onward they are separate and users given permissions to access one club won’t automatically get the other.

Each session has an access code that you can give people so they can access the session in vsBadminton. As well as the QR code link there is now a direct link 🔗 . If you “copy link location” in your browser, you can share that link with other people and they can use it directly just like the QR code.
