February 2024 Updates

Tournament Preferences

The latest release has a few small changes around ratings and preferences

Firstly the rating algorithm has been changed so that after a result, players with a shorter history of games get their rating adjusted by more than players with a longer history. This is fairly normal in sport rating systems, and it means that players’ ratings will reflect their actual strength more quickly, and that playing with or against a player whose rating has not yet settled to their real strength will have smaller effect on other players’ ratings.

Secondly, the player screen now shows the numerical rating as well as the graphical slider. The slider itself is now locked - if you have player edit permission, you can click the lock icon to unlock it in order to manually move the slider.

If you want to completely disable manual adjustments, you can do that on the preferences menu (a new menu on the Settings screen).

As part of the game picking algorithm, vsBadminton predicts the score for each game. This predicted score is now shown on the game screen. If you don’t like that, you can turn it off on the preferences menu.

The “short games to 15” and “ignore male/female” settings are also moved to the new preferences menu.
